Volunteer Honors

In the Grand Coulee Dam Area, The Star Newspaper encourages volunteerism by sponsoring a peer-reviewed campaign to honor one person others have deemed as especially giving throughout their lives.

This year the community voices selected our own Nespelem School Board Director, Jeanne Moon.

Nominated by Jolene Marchand, another Nespelem Board Director, Jeanne received recognition for her years of giving to the community not only through her forty-three years of school board work, including serving as advisor in Native American History for the Washington State School Directors Association, but also as the “go-to person” for “culture, tradition, religion and education,” says Colleen Leskinen.

We thank Jeanne Moon for all her community work, and especially, for her continuous support of education at Nespelem School.

Holiday Spirit

Thank you, Mrs. Armstrong-Montes!

For thirty-seven years, Nancy Armstrong-Montes has led the Nespelem School students in music and spirit for assemblies and especially for the Christmas program. Her piano and guitar accompaniment guides our voices in celebration of the holidays, providing us with joyful learning.

At the Christmas Program on Tuesday, December 20th, 2011, Nancy was honored for her years of service in not just music, but also in teaching by our Nespelem School Board of Directors, The Colville Tribes, and The Parent Education Committee. As Mary Richardson stated, “She treated everyone fairly.”

Finally, Mrs Montes asked all her previous and current students to take the stage to join in singing “Little Drummer Boy,” a song she has taught all her students to sing.

We thank Mrs. Armstrong-Montes for lifting our knowledge and our spirits.

Honor All Veterans 11-11-11

Nespelem School Veterans Day Assembly will be held on Thursday, November 10th in the Nespelem School Gymnasium at 1:30 PM.

We invite all veterans and community members to attend.

We thank the VFW Ladies Auxiliary for again sponsoring both an art and an essay contest.

Two of our students, Tristen and Mysti, created another project for our middle school based on the essay contest by the VFW. To read about the project, please go to our student blog Eagles Write.

The project will be added to all week. Here is the start by grades seven and eight. Grade six, seven, and eight will also add more writing during this week.

The lunchroom, abuzz with chatter among grandchildren and grandparents, aunties, and uncles, teemed with smiles and great food. The Elder Breakfast again this year provided an opportunity to honor our elders during this fall season.

Thanks to everyone for their attendance and support.

BBQ News

Our annual BBQ on August 30th to kick start the year was a success. The District prepared food for 300 people and we ran out! That shows are community support for our school.

An introduction by Superintendent John Adkins was followed by introductions of the staff. Guardians and family then attended two sessions in classrooms of their choice. Teachers provided information for the year with handouts. Students enjoyed seeing friends and visiting their new classrooms, all ready for the first day, August 31st.

Pow Wow Traditions

A sunny, windy day brought us a wonderful setting for our spring pow wow, presented by the Eaglet Dancers and Ms Terrie Sanger. The Owl Dance and musical chairs highlighted the involvement by students. Eddie Conan and Shihiya Vargas-Thomas spoke and danced away to become our new royalty. Mr. Nespelem Spirit is Eddie Conan and Shihiya Vargas-Thomas is Miss Nespelem Spirit.
